Tips for How to Make Your Yoga Classed Eating Disorder Informed

When I teach professionals about the role of yoga in eating disorder recovery in my training, I always emphasize the importance of scope of practice. Scope of Practice means what we are permitted to undertake based on our professional credentials. Respecting scope of practice protects the individuals we guide and ourselves. We are most potent as teachers when we stay in our scope of practice and share what we are trained to do.

No matter what style of yoga you teach, here are some ways to make your classes eating disorder informed that are within the scope of practice for yoga teachers:

💡 Teach from a trauma-informed lens

💡 Use invitatory language

💡 Guide participants to notice rather than prescribe what "should" be felt

💡 Be mindful of how you speak about the body and its parts

💡 Eliminate diet talk and diet culture references

💡 Create a noncompetitive atmosphere

💡 Offer lots of options

💡 Use action words that encourage self-awareness versus striving

💡 Remind the class often to honor their bodies
