When Paying Attention to Breathing Is Triggering

Many of my yoga therapy clients share that paying attention to their breath can be activating, especially if they are already feeling anxious or overwhelmed. Going from the heightened energy of anxiety to that of stillness can be jarring to the system. We usually need to downshift in a few different ways before our minds and bodies are ready for stillness.

If paying attention to your breath feels overwhelming, or even triggering, you aren't alone. Sometimes we need more activity to help us slow our thoughts and calm our bodies, like taking a walk, or shaking out our hands and arms. There's no right way -- just the way that helps you.
