Integrating Yoga into Psychotherapy for Eating Disorder Recovery

Yoga is a spiritual practice with roots in ancient India. Yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning “to yoke” or “to join.”  Eating Disorders are a complex set of psychological disorders that are well documented to cause a disruption between the mind and the body, impacted by both internal and external factors. Yoga practices can act as a treatment bridge between the mind and the body, as well as restore homeostasis to the body.

Yoga is a mindfulness practice and yoga and mindfulness have been researched and documented to increase gray matter, improve the connection of self-regulatory processes, decrease amygdala size, increase GABA levels, and improve interoception, exteroception, and proprioception. All of these changes can have a powerful impact on somebody's recovery from an eating disorder.

Join Angela Prior, a licensed clinical social worker-supervisor and yoga teacher, as she shares her professional expertise on how to integrate yoga practices into your psychotherapy session. This training will focus on integrating seated shapes (yoga postures), breathing techniques, meditations, and hand mudras in the therapy room that are specific to meeting needs of somebody who is experiencing an eating disorder.

In this 2-hour workshop, we will:

  1. Review researched and documented benefits of yoga and mindfulness that are helpful for eating disorder recovery

  2. Explore when and how to integrate yoga in psychotherapy sessions

  3. Experience seated shapes, breathing practices, hand mudras, and meditation that you can bring into your sessions

This virtual workshop is for therapists and other mental healthcare professionals who wish to learn yoga practices that are safe and appropriate for clinical settings and clients with eating disorders. All engaged in related work or who have an interest in this topic are welcome. Some yoga knowledge is preferred, but not required.
